Turning Psychoanalysis On Its Head:

Examining Historical Theories of Child Development

Presenter: Rona Knight, PhD

Discussant: Lisa Marcus, PhD

This lecture examines the relevance of 100 year old concepts of development and the psychoanalytic models they authenticate. Using the lens of contemporary psychoanalytic theory and developmental research, the presenter will discuss which constructs remain germane and which require a change of terminology in the theories of Freud, Melanie Klein, Winnicott, and Anna Freud.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify and describe the basic developmental descriptions that are embedded in the historical theories of Freud, Anna Freud, Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott.
  2. Have an understanding of the current developmental research used as a basis for modern psychoanalytic theory.
  3. Have a deeper understanding of the developmental processes in the psychoanalytic treatment of their child and adolescent patients.
  4. Have a working definition and understanding of nonlinear dynamic systems theory that can be applied to analytic work with children and adolescents.
