The Art and Life of Marc Chagall: Psychoanalytic Considerations
Instructor: Gary Plotke, MD
Professional Registration
$225.00
Student/Trainee Registration
$50.00
This course offers a psychoanalytically informed study of Marc Chagall’s life and art. Each session will combine lecture and discussion, drawing from his writings, interviews, memoir, biographies, and critical literature. We will analyze key themes in his work, examining their connections to his personal experiences, historical events, and artistic influences. Chagall’s evolving Jewish identity, nostalgia, and utopian vision will be explored, particularly in the context of 20th-century upheavals, including the transformations of Russian Jewish life, World War II, and shifts in modern art. Psychoanalytic theory will provide insight into his creative process and the symbolic world he constructed. Additionally, we will assess how Chagall reconciled Jewish particularism with universalism, especially in his later monumental works. By studying his artistic evolution, this course aims to deepen our understanding of how personal and cultural forces shaped one of the most distinctive artists of the 20th century.
