Welcome to the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis
The mission of the Western New England Institute for psychoanalysis, founded in 1954, is the education of future analysts. Over the past 70 years we have graduated hundreds of analysts who have gone on to outstanding careers as clinicians, teachers, and contributors to our literature. We are heterodox in theory, grounded in classical Freudian theory but home to Kleinians, Lacanians, Object Relations theorists, relational theorists, and others. Over the years we have been the home of a number of internationally prominent theorists and teachers, perhaps most eminently Hans Loewald. We have been in the forefront of educating students from a variety of educational backgrounds, and continue to value diversity of theory, background, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation and gender identity.
The Institute is led by its Board of Directors, with educational activities under the aegis of the Education Committee. The Institute offers three programs, Adult Psychoanalysis, Child Psychoanalysis, and the Scholar’s Program.
The Adult Psychoanalysis track prepares students for a career as an analyst treating adults, through a combination of personal analysis, coursework, and supervised case work. The Child Psychoanalysis program builds on the adult training, with the addition of coursework and supervised clinical work specifically aimed at children and adolescents. The Scholar’s Program is intended for non-clinicians who have an interest in psychoanalytic theory and practice, and provides an opportunity for in depth study of analytic theory.
